Mahajati Sadan |
|
| Mahajati Sadan In response to the request of Subhash Chandra Basu Kabi Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore laid the foundation stone of Mahajati Sadan on August 19, 1939. The sudden disappearance of Subhash Chandra Basu from Country in 1941 and subsequent Confiscation of property by the then British Government stopped the progress of construction of the building. After independence Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, showed an interest in giving shape to the dream of Subhash Chandra and the "Mahajati Sadan Act 1949" was enacted for completion of the construction as also for its power management, the responsibility of which was entrusted to a Board of Trustees under the Act. Dr. Roy performed the formal opening of this National Institution on August 19, 1958. The auditorium of Mahajati Sadan has become very popular. Celebration of birth anniversaries of great men and National leaders, convocation of Kolkata University, besides cultural programmes of different organisations, are held in the auditorium regularly.
