Activities of Rajya Charukala Parshad:

The State Government has been doing its part even if in a small way - to help develop intellectual, cultural and art activities in the society. As many as five Academies or Parshad have been constituted of which Rajya Charukala Parshad is one. Rajya Charukala Parshad was formed in 1987. The object of setting up this academy on visual arts was to take care of the Art Movement with the advice and cooperation of eminent personalities associated with visual arts. It was thought necessary to stand behind the people of the State associated with art activities. Rajya Charukala Parshad is, in a way, a centre of mutual communication of such people. The activities of Rajya Charukala Parshad are not confined to the metropolis but have been spread over the district towns also.

Rajya Charukala Parshad arranges different programmes throughout the year. Workshops are organised for art-painting and sculptures fin a number of districts where distinguish artists impart training. The objective of those workshops is to bring artists who could not get admitted to Government or quasi-Government Institutions into contact with the renowned artists through week long workshops at Government expense, so that they can find encouragement and proper directions. Birth anniversaries of distinguish artists are celebrated through exhibition of their painting and sculptures. A 60-day "Art Appreciation Course" is held in every year and the annual art exhibition takes place at Gaganendra Pradarshasala, where young artists of the entire State find a place to display their own art. At the conclusion of the exhibition, best exhibits are rewarded. Apart from this, the art festival is an attractive programme of Rajya Charukala Parshad. Besides the works of famous artists that the displayed in the Gaganendra Pradarshasala and in the Rabindra Sadan-Nandan complex, the works of young artists from different districts of West Bengal find a place in this festival.

In addition to exhibitions, seminars and cultural programme s are also held. Every year a few young and experienced artists and art organisers are given financial assistance by Parshad so that they may continue their activities without any hindrance. The Parshad also publishes a journal and books related to visual arts.

Though the employees of the Parshad contribute a great deal to the success of such workshops which are held in almost every districts, the cooperation which is received from local people is worth commendation.

It is only to be expected that with the cooperation of all, the Rajya Charukala Parshad will be in a position to assume a more important and effective role in future. Now the Porishad has its own building - Charukala Bhawban.
