Rajya Sangeet Akademi

Rajya Sangeet Akademi was set up in March, 1982 with four basic objectives: the preservation and continuance of cultural heritage of Bengal in music and dance, the promotion of various research work in music and allied subjects, the publication of books and production of cassettes with a view to disseminating the performing arts and the recognition of fresh talents in the State in these areas.

The Academy plays a major role in maintaining a reliable and authentic document of present and past glory of our great musical tradition. The air-conditioned Music Archive (with the additional facility of a free listening room, showing its video cassettes on its own VCR) is already equipped with more than 284 hours video-recording in total that covers the discussions and demonstrations of the renowned personalities of the world of music and dance. The complete collection of the voice of Rabindranath Tagore is the latest collection of the Archive. The Publication and Library are two other prestigious wings of the Academy that are rapidly in progress. The Academy carries out one major responsibility of paying tribute to the senior masters of the present century by the annual presentation of ALAUDDIN PURASHKAR. The recipients of the Award from Government of West Bengal, so far include persons like Timir Baran, Salil Chowdhury, Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Hemanta Mukherjee, Hirendra Kumar Ganguly, Amala Shankar, V. Balsara and Sandhya Mukherjee.
