News Bureau of the Information Directorate eyes and ears of the State Government does press relations work for all the State Government departments. This Wing maintains constant liaison between the Government and the media by organising press conferences, press coverage, press parties and issuing press releases/notes, handouts and background material on all important activities and programmes of the Government. This Bureau also issues rejoinders to newspapers to contradict misleading reports published by them on the activities of the government. Besides, newspaper clippings are also sent to Ministers / Secretaries on regular basis in order to apprise them about the daily happening in the State.
News Bureau is also responsible for providing facilities to the Media persons. Press accreditation cards are issued to the media representatives on the advice of the Press Accreditation Committee constituted by the State Government for this purpose. Certificates to the Media representatives are issued by the News Bureau who like to avail themselves of the rail travel concession facility. All matters relating to the Press Council of India are also handled by this Bureau.
During VVIPs visit to the State, News Bureau officials help the police authorities in marshalling the press and organises press coverage (including photo coverage) of their programmes at different venues.
During all Major elections, News Bureau arranges to disseminate election results to the media organisations by setting up a Special Election News Room at Rotunda(Writers' Buildings). The Bureau also looks after the media relations and Press coverage during the Kolkata Film festival, including Sangeet Mela, Kavita Utsab and Natya Mela etc..
During natural calamities like floods, cyclone News Bureau sets up special news room to provide information to the Press & Media.
Research & reference section, a part & parcel of the News Bureau is also active in updating the data and information for dissemination to the public, if and when asked for.
